HEA 2019 Course Outlines

HEA 2019 is structured in 4 streams called Colleges

Over the weekend, some sessions will be ‘plenary’ where all delegates attend together, for example, Kevin Keller’s keynote address on Storytelling, and “The Inner Game of Music” presentation. These sessions will automatically appear in your schedule.

Other sessions will be compulsory within each stream – there is no need to make choices. You will automatically be selected for those classes and they will appear in your schedule. Some sessions on the other hand offer you 2 or 3 choices, rather than being compulsory. You get to select which one appeals the most as part of the registration process..

On Sunday, ALL sessions are open to all delegates. Choose which elective topics are of interest to you. Graze on all three 45 min sessions back to back, or pick one or two of interest giving yourself a break.

The HEA faculty reserves the right to alter any course should there be insufficient interest in any elective.

Harmony College - for singers

This year’s Harmony College will help all singers to step up to the plate beyond good vocal production. Tailor your classes to your needs – choose Gang Singing with A Coach or advanced vocal technique in Matt’s Vocal Expression class. Learn about phone apps that will help your learning or take Jill’s advanced How to Learn Songs. We’ve invited Jen Howson back to expand on her wonderful class “The Emotional Journey” using body and facial expression. On Sunday, you can choose from a buffet of elective choices along with all other delegates. Saturday’s show will be an evening of fun, fellowship and frivolity so bring your best acts!

Directors College - for Directors, Assistant Directors, Music Educators

In the past, Directors have received conducting and rehearsal technique instruction. This year, Kevin Keller will bring his knowledge and experience in focussing on leadership and motivation of your members in classes called “The Inner Game of Music” and “The ABC Model of Leadership”. Throughout the Directors’ stream you will be able to tailor choices to your needs with Advanced Conducting or How to Give a PVI. On Sunday, you can choose from a buffet of elective choices along with all other delegates. Oh - and please make sure your chorus has a song to present on the Saturday night show.

Leadership College for members of Chapter Management, Music Teams, Show committees, and other Leadership Teams

For the first time, leaders of chapters and choruses will be able to choose from a gourmet menu of topics in your very own Leadership College. From Putting on a Great Show to learning how VFX and MRH have developed highly successful music and management teams to Kevin Keller’s ABC Model of Leadership, you will be sure to benefit from the experience of others. Want to write an effective and useable Strategic Plan or find out how to beat copyright issues? Sign up here. On Sunday, you can choose from a buffet of general elective choices along with all other delegates.

Quartet Collegefor established quartets.

A limited number of quartets will be able to sign up in the Quartet College stream to receive specialised coaching from our top barbershop technicians in NZ. Guest coaching spots will be filled by Jen Howson (Australia) and Kevin Keller (US). Preference will be given to established quartets who have competed at least once before. Priority will be given to quartets in order of completeness of registration - ie. all four members are registered. If you wish to bring a new or ‘pick-up' quartet to Quartet College, please make sure you select the Quartet option with the caption that says 'Our quartet hasn't competed at nationals but we wish to apply for a place in the Quartet College'. Take part in the Regional Quartet Qualifying Contest on Saturday night to earn your place to compete at the National Quartet Contest in Christchurch later in 2019. On Sunday, you can choose from a buffet of general elective choices along with all other delegates.
