Course Sessions Organised by Stream
The table below shows all of the sessions planned for each stream for the weekend. You will only attend those sessions for the stream you selected when you registered (or sessions that are indicated with "(all streams)").

Harmony Stream
Harmony stream sessions include two sessions especially tailored to chorus singers. There are other sessions that all streams will attend together. Finally on the Sunday all streams will attend 2 sessions where you can pick one elective out of six offered for each session.

Each delegate will receive an individually tailored timetable showing only the sessions they specified when they registered.

R1 - Geographically Challenged Chorus - Rehearsal

Geographically Challenged Chorus Rehearsal


You will be allocated into a small chorus consisting of a mix of members from all over NZ along with two of our top coaches. The challenge is to choose two songs you all know in common and rehearse them to the best of your ability for the Geographically Challenged Chorus Sing-Off.

General Session warm-ups will be led by our latest Coaching Candidates team, to ensure we are physically, mentally, vocally, and musically prepared for the weekend ahead.

G1 - So You Think You Got Rhythm

So You Think You Got Rhythm


Even if you think you know rhythm and all its intricacies, this session with Joe Cerutti will reframe your beliefs about the importance of rhythm in rehearsing songs. Joe will break down the concepts of rhythm into three steps that will work across all ability levels. You will also learn how rehearsing rhythm translates into performance. Song is Drivin' Me Crazy by Bob Disney.

How many resonant spaces are there?


There's a time and place for metaphors in singing but this class busts some myths about resonant spaces. Learn how metaphors are linked to good vocal practice and we'll help to find the sweet spot in your own voice. Singing has never been easier!
SH1.2 - Tuning Chords That Just Won’t Lock

Tuning Chords That Just Won’t Lock


Ever been in a situation where you just couldn’t get that pesky chord to ring? Sing louder! Sing softer? More bass! Wait, change the vowel? Ahh! Learn how to use basic music theory to understand how chords are built, why some are trickier than others, and how to diagnose and fix them when they sound, well, less than perfect. You don’t need to be a baritone to get your juices flowing in this one, but a strong background in theory is recommended.

Come along to learn some sustainable tips and tricks from Vocal FX’s Lead Section Leader, Josh Ellery. He will help you work towards consistency in your vocal approach, and help you to present yourself as the best singer you can be each week at chorus rehearsal (and beyond).
SH2.2 - So you've got rhythm - follow up with Jill

So you've got rhythm - follow up with Jill


An opportunity to solidify learning with Jill Rodgers. Spend anther hour practising the rhythm techniques Joe Cerutti taught in the general session. When we all sing in perfect synchronisation we will ring more chords, and when we honour the music's rhythmic intentions, the audience will enjoy our performance ten-fold. And it's also another opportunity to sing in a group!

Three Lenses and One Interpreter - quartet coaching under glass


Watch the magic of three certified judges/coaches from each of the judging categories as they work with a number of quartets. Meanwhile master mind Joe Cerutti will translate and interpret in real time what each coach is aiming to achieve.

As the world embraces welcoming all genders to barbershop, listen to Joe Cerutti give an update on progress in the US and Europe so far. An opportunity for discussion is included.

Lock and Ring Chords Like a Pro


What if your group sings well, is confident with the music and words but still doesn’t have a unit sound? This session will cover refining resonance, creating chordal consistency and singing sonorously. Learn to listen for a ringing chord, what an overtone is, and you'll have some exercises to take away.

Want to maximise your singing time at HEA this year? Come along to have a run through a bunch of the old favourites! We’ll find some new ways of exploring these well-known polecats, through finding the key parts of the arrangements and exploring them artistically. Bring Barberpole Cat Books Vol I (USD6.67) and Vol II (USD21.33) if you are not familiar with those arrangements. Purchase via BHS website under "Get Music".

You've heard your director ask you to sing expressively and sensitively, but how do we do that? This class provides practical tools and an easy-to-follow strategy for achieving musical artistry every time you sing. Learn the secrets of singing with forward-momentum, with "light and shade", and in ways that truly connect with the audience. You'll never be accused of gang singing again!

This class explores how to give birth to a Strategic Plan and then celebrate its birthday along the way. Mighty River Harmony has a strong Strategic Plan that is a living document driving goals and actions which constantly push the chapter to achieve great things. Prepare to be amazed by the power of a plan and a list of actions.
E1.6 - Finale for Dummies Part 1

Finale for Dummies Part 1


This 2-hour practical lab course is designed for those who already have Finale music notation software on their computer and would like to expand on their skills. In a very short time, we’ll cover the essential elements of building a score, so that you have a clear picture of how to go about pumping out some barbershop dots all by yourself. Make sure you choose Part 2 as well. Or if you would simply like to explore the possibilities of music notation to find out the software programme's potential before jumping in (try before you buy) just sign up to Part 1 to be a fly on the wall.

Is it Groundhog Day at your chorus rehearsal? Do you feel like each year rolls around and your chorus is going through the same routines? Joe Cerutti will give directors, music team leaders and chapter leaders a shot in the arm with ideas outside the square to fill your tool box with innovative ideas to keep your chorus motivated, energised, and keen to turn up to rehearsal and performances.

So What Did We Learn Again? - how to retain all the good stuff


Is your group progressing or staying at the same level year after year? Getting coaching is always helpful for groups but how do we decide what to focus on after the coaching and how do we remember the key takeaways of what is being taught to us? This session will show different ways of dissecting knowledge and retaining the bits that are important.

E2.5 - Tonal Energy Tuner - a deep dive

Tonal Energy Tuner - a deep dive


Help your chorus by becoming an expert user of the best app for musicians on the market. This class allows plenty of time to get set up and explore the various functions of Tonal Energy Tuner. We will ring some chords using the just intonation feature, learn how to adjust the subdivision settings on the metronome, change the labels to match the key we're singing in, and much more. Useful for new users, and for those who have already installed the app but want more time to delve into its features. Pre-requisite: a smartphone or tablet and an account on the Apple or Google Play store. The app costs around $10 (but is well worth it!)
